Places of Interest
1. LENGTENG TLANG:
The highest peak in Mizoram, Lengteng Tlang, is located within the Lamzawl area. The peak lies about 4 kilometers from Lamzawl village towards the north, and it is the highest point within the Lengteng Wildlife Sanctuary. Even from a distance, the mountain appears prominently beneath the sky, and it is covered with dense forests that are home to a large population of Phar (a type of bamboo). Lengteng peak rises to an elevation of 2,141 meters (7,024 feet), and it is approximately 68 kilometers from Saitual, the district capital. The Lengteng area is also rich in Thereng (local insect). Thereng is known as Lengthe in Dapzar(Paite) language. Locally, it used to be referred to as “Lengthe Tlang” (Lengthe Mountain), but over time, the name evolved to “Lengteng Tlang.” It is considered as the coldest mountain in Mizoram where the is no presence of ants and mosquitoes.
2. SURTLANG:
This mountain is located within the Teikhang area, along the Sialkal mountain range. It is one of the prominent high peaks in Mizoram, standing at an elevation of 1,967 meters (6,453 feet). It is situated approximately 114 kilometers from the district capital, Saitual. Being a very tall mountain, it is often enveloped in clouds, especially during the rainy season. Due to the constant fog that lingers around the peak—making it difficult to distinguish it from other places—it is called Surtlang (literally meaning “foggy mountain” or “obscured mountain”).
3. TAWI TLANG:
Ṭawi Tlang is located near Ṭwizo village and is known as a beautiful and prominent hill. Several villages are nestled around its slopes, and it rises to an elevation of 1,837 meters (6,027 feet). It is approximately 26 kilometers from the district capital, Saitual. Unlike typical conical peaks, Āwi Tlang has a broad and gently sloping summit. Because it is clearly visible from the western side, people began calling it “Ṭawi Tlang.” To preserve its pristine environment, the government has included this prominent mountain within the Forest and Wildlife Department’s Wildlife Sanctuary area. Various species of wild animals and birds can still be found in the region.
4. MAWMRANG TLANG:
Mawmrang Tlang is located in the Pawlrang area. It ranks as the 11th highest peak in the state, with an elevation of 1812 meters (5945 feet). It lies approximately 44 kilometers from the district capital, Saitual. Mawmrang Tlang is a majestic mountain known for its scenic beauty and impressive height. From the summit, the view is breathtaking, and historically, various animal and bird species which lives on cliffs are found. The area is also known to have numerous caves. A unique species of spider, rarely found elsewhere in Mizoram is found here, thus the name “Mawmrang Tlang” is believed to have originated from this.
5. NAUZAURZO:
Nauzuarzo Tlang is located near the village of Kawlbem, along the Sialkal range, and is among the highest peaks in Mizoram, with an elevation of 2130 meters (6988 feet). It is approximately 100 kilometers away from the district capital, Saitual. Situated within the Lengteng Wildlife Sanctuary, the hill stands tall and majestic, stretching prominently in the eastern direction. From its slopes, a river flows out from a lush valley, and after heavy rainfall, the area becomes even more beautiful with streams and springs bursting to life. The origin of the hill’s name comes from a tale told by locals. People used to lived in the plain area above the cliff and once a baby crawl towards the cliff and the villagers were scared that the baby would crawl and fall from the cliff if they run after the baby, so they created a bell to call the baby back to safety. From then on, the cliff was called ‘Nauzuar Kham’ and the surrounding dense forest as Nauzuarzo.
