History

Saitual District was created by the Government of Mizoram on 3rd June 2019 and is one of the eleven districts of Mizoram state in India. The district was mapped out from the then-existing administrative districts of Aizawl and Champhai. Saitual District administers two civil Subdivisions, viz. Saitual and Ngopa, which is divided into two development blocks, viz. Phullen and Ngopa.

Overseen and coordinated by the Deputy Commissioner of the district, there are currently sixteen (25) District/Sub-Division/Circle level office establishments stationed within the district including the Deputy Commissioner’s Office.

Saitual District is located at Latitude 23°41’20.18″N and Longitude 92°57’49.71″E. Saitual District is situated in the northern part of Mizoram, sharing borders with its neighboring districts, Champhai and Aizawl. Its geographical attributes are defined by rolling hills, dense forests, and numerous rivers and streams that meander through the landscape. The district is characterized by a subtropical climate, resulting in mild winters and pleasantly warm summers. The lush, green terrain, dominated by deciduous and evergreen forests, offers an idyllic setting for nature enthusiasts and trekkers.

One of the key aspects that define the cultural significance of Saitual is the presence of numerous NGOs and local self-governing bodies known as “Village Councils.” These organization and councils play a vital role in maintaining peace and harmony while the VC help run the administration of the district. Together they often act as custodians of cultural heritage, preserving ancient traditions and customs that have been passed down through generations.
